Figs – a low calorie treat
Delicious, sweet fig fruit is a prime fruit enjoyed since antiquity in the human history. Figs are naturally rich in phytonutrients, anti-oxidants and vitamins. Dried figs are a great source of minerals and vitamins. The fig fruit tree is native to the temperate climate of Asia Minor or Turkey and today is grown as an important fruit of commerce in the eastern Mediterranean region, the USA and Spain.
Figs are available all year round. When buying fresh figs, look for uniform ripe ones that are soft and have a sweet, pleasant aroma. Figs should be eaten while fresh and can be kept in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
Dried figs provide more fiber per serving than any other dried or fresh fruit. They have a mildly sweet taste and are commonly consumed in a dried state, but fresh figs are also easy to eat, as well. Figs are often enjoyed on their own, but they pair well with many other flavors and foods. Eat dried figs as a snack or add them to oatmeal or salads for a touch of sweetness. Figs provide a number of essential nutrients besides fiber and provide health benefits as well, making them a healthy fruit option.
